Use less hot water
Hot water uses lots of energy, which represents up to 27% of the average power bill for electric hot water systems. Use low-flow showerheads, wash clothes in cold water and have shorter showers (at least occasionally).
Most of these measures save water as well as reduce emissions and energy costs. For example, washing clothes in cold water can reduce washing machine energy by 80%, and by only washing full loads you will save energy as well as water (see washing machine running costs).
To reduce water heating costs further, you may be able to change your hot water system.
Save up to 500kg of carbon by reducing hot water use
